A General Introduction to Lanzhou Polytechnic College

£ £ Lanzhou Polytechnic College (LZPTC) is an full-time standard technical college which belongs to Gansu Province. The predecessor of this college was Gansu Mechanical Manufacture School in 1958. In the restructure of colleges in 1962, the original mechanical, coal, electrical, light industrial, heavy industrial ,posts and telecommunications and other six schools were amalgamated and Gansu Industry School was established. In 1974, the school changed its name into Lanzhou Industrial School. In 1980, the original State Education Commission and Mechanical Industry Ministry ascertain the school as a national key polytechnic school. In April, 1989, Lanzhou Polytechnic College was reconstructed by the original State Education Commission' approval.

£ £ The college is located in Lanzhou City¡ªGansu provincial capital. The college occupies 502 mu of land and has a building area of 186,000 square meters. The total value of fixed assets is 157 million yuan and the total value of teaching instrument and equipment is 33.1 million yuan. The library of the college has a collection of 410 thousands of books, built with electronic reading room, realizing the automation of book retrieving and book borrowing. In 1999 college computer network was built. The college enrolls students towards eleven provinces and autonomous regions of the country. At present there are about 5,908 full-time three-year college students, 81 students are regular undergraduates and there are 1,630 registered adult students of various kinds.

£ £ The college has a staff team reasonable in structure, excellent in diathesis. There are 474 employees among whom 367 are full-time teachers. Among the teachers there are 128 professors, associate professors, senior engineers, associate research fellows and other senior academic rank's staff. 129 teachers are postgraduates, among whom 15 teachers have doctor's degrees. 207 persons possess teacher's and engineer's qualifications. One expert enjoys special governmental allowances from the State Council. Some teachers have been elected as Gansu advanced teachers and one teacher was awarded Gansu advanced woman scientific worker. Several teachers got Young Talented Teachers Prize of Gansu Province. Three foreign teachers have been employed all the year round.

£ £ The college has established eight teaching departments: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Civil Engineering, Management Engineering, Foreign Languages, Social Science and Artistic Designing . There are two other departments in the college: Basic Courses Department and Physical Education Department. There are three teaching centers as follows: Computer Center, Machine Processing Center, and Adult Education Center.

£ £ There are 21 engineering majors: mechanical designing and manufacturing , mechanical manufacturing and automation, mould designing and manufacturing, electromechanical integration, digital control technology, the technology of the automation of electric power system, the technology of electric automation, the technology of electronic information engineering, communication technology, the technology of electric power supplying and applying, measuring techniques and its application, computer application technology, software technology, computer network technology, the maintenance of computer system, computer figure and image technology, architectural engineering, architectural equipment engineering, construction cost and management, architectural electrification, electronic business etc. There are 13 specialties of the categories of economics, management, language & art as follows: accounting, marketing, industrial and commercial enterprise management, industrial and commercial administrative management, economic information management, material flow management, secretariat, community management and service, business English, applied Japanese, applied English, advertisement designing and manufacturing, artistic designing, etc. There are two regular full-time college majors which are mechanical designing & manufacturing and automation, automation, which are jointly organized with Lanzhou Jiaotong University. Specialized course construction covers three main specialties such as engineering, management and literature and eight main majors, among which four majors: mechanical manufacture engineering and automation, industrial electric automation, computer software, marketing and E-commerce are established as experiment at selected points of Gansu educational reform. There are 11 adult specialties as follows: power plant and electric-power system, the technology of electricity supplying and applying, the technology of electric automation, the technology of the combination of mechanics and electricity, the technology of computer application, architectural engineering management, financial management, the management of industrial and commercial enterprises, marketing, artistic designing, etc. The college has the cooperation with Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China University of Geology, Shaanxi University of Science and Technology and Zhongyuan College of Technology to hold 7 four-year adult specialities: the combination of mechanics and electricity, electric engineering and electric automation, the science and technology of computers, accounting, international economics and trade, economics and law.

£ £ There are 66 labs including engineering mechanics, mechanical design, metallographic and heat treatment, allowable error and measurement, digital control technology, hydraulic transmission, electro-techniques, electronic technology, electric power technology, communication technology, measurement and control technology, automatic control, building material, water-heating & air-conditioning facilities, civil engineering and engineering geology. There are 21 work unit bases such as: metalworking, CAD/CAM, mould pressing, electrician, industrial control, electronic information, computer application, building construction in the college. There are 19 manufacturing and research bases which cooperate with Lanzhou Electric Motors, Lanzhou Machine Tool Plant, Tianshui Great Wall Switchgear Plant, Gansu Huaming Electric Power Company, Second Construction Group of Lanzhou outside the college. There are 9 professional skill training sites and one state vocational skill identification institute. There are 21 modern multi-media classrooms, five language labs and more than 1470 computers. Metalworking practice passed the evaluation of the original State Education Commission and mechanical engineering, electric engineering and computer engineering majors' basic labs attain the required provincial standards.

£ £ The college keeps improving the teaching quality as the center of the work, actively facilitates the work of teaching reform. It has carried out 160 researches on teaching reform subjects, 75 of which have been completed. In the completed items, one won a second-prize of national higher educational fruit; 11 items won the teaching fruit prize of Guansu Province; there are one national elite subject and 5 provincial elite subjects; in 2005 2 subjects have been recommended as the national elite subjects.

£ £ The college attaches great importance to scientific research and exchanges with the outside. It has undertaken 85 scientific research projects, among which 42projects have passed provincial identification and been checked and accepted by the consignor; 19 items have got the new type practical patent;18 projects have got the provincial scientific progressive awards. More than 70 monographs and textbooks and more than 1280 academic papers have been published. The number of the papers which have been collected by EI increases year by year. According to the statistics of Gansu scientific and technological information institution, the number of the papers that have been published in the national key periodicals is the seventh among Gansu institutions of higher learning for two successive years . ¡°Journal of Lanzhou Polytechnic College¡± has received the second excellent award for scientific and technological periodicals of national institutions of higher learning from the department of science and technology with National Education Ministry. The college's journal is subscribed and collected by Beijing Library and Shanghai Library. The journal is a source of ¡°China's Academic Journal Comprehensive Appraisal Data Base¡±. In 2003,the college began to hold international exchange programmes, responsible of carrying out ¡° the special bilateral educational cooperation programme between China and the countries from East Europe, the Commonwealth of Independent States and Baltic Sea¡± of Gansu Province. Now there are 14 overseas students sent by government.

£ £ The college has had remarkable achievements in national competition for college students in mathematical modeling and electronic designing successively. The college has received one first national award, 8 national second prizes, 10 provincial special awards, 13 provincial first prizes and 16 provincial second prizes. 29 academic papers and scientific & technological works have got provincial prizes in College Students' ¡°Challenging Cup¡± Competition. The college came out on top in the national college students' practical English test. Since the establishment of the system of promoting three ¨Cyear college students to regular higher learning, the number of the students who have been promoted to regular colleges ranks first in the province. In recent three years, graduates' average employment rate is up to 80% once every year.

Lanzhou Polytechnic College got a fine result, which ranked the tenth among the 26 colleges that were evaluated. In 2004, the college was granted the title of the provincial advanced working unit in the building of spiritual civilization by the provincial commission of CPC and the provincial government.
